Person-centred care focuses on the individual, their needs, and their values. The care they receive should be personable to them and their health requirements. Our Chief Nurse, Clare and Head of Quality Improvement, Rhiannon, discuss the benefits of person-centred care and how, at Thornbury Community Services, we ensure our clients receive the care that’s right for them.

What is person-centred care?

Person-centred care goes beyond supporting people’s clinical needs. It’s about finding what is important to the client and what can be done to put their needs first in the care they receive to better support their health, wellbeing and lifestyle.

The importance of person-centred care

Person-centred care is important for both the people receiving the care and those delivering the care.

For healthcare professionals, delivering person-centred care to individuals enables them to develop their skills and make effective and reactive decisions using their clinical expertise to ensure the clients remain stable and content. It can also help create informed decisions based on data, the client’s needs and also their values.

For those receiving person-centred care, it provides them with a sense of purpose and understanding. They know their needs have been considered and respected, which can support in creating meaningful professional relationships with the staff and clinical lead overseeing their care.

Benefits of person-centred care

The delivery of person-centred care can provide many benefits including:

1. Strong relationships

As person-centred care focuses on the specific needs of the individual, it will encourage them to develop a meaningful relationship with those who deliver their care. Naturally, the client receiving care will feel valued and heard, which can make a difference to their entire care experience.

2. Increase clients motivation

When clients receive care from nurses and support workers that meet their medical and personal needs, it can encourage them to feel motivated and invested in their care and relationships with those involved in their care plan.

3. Grows confidence

Person-centred care supports clients to feel like they’re receiving the right care for them and their needs. It can grow trust and confidence between the healthcare professionals, clients and their families.

4. Improves quality of life

By delivering person-centred care to adults and children, you are meeting their exact needs, which supports them to live a meaningful life under your care supervision.

Putting person-centred care into practice

At Thornbury Community Services (TCS), we understand the importance of person-centred care and how putting it into practice enables our clients to feel valued and safe in their own homes. To ensure we deliver consistent ‘Outstanding’ CQC-rated care services, we continuously monitor, review and assess every aspect of our clients’ needs, so the data we obtain drives everything we do.

We work collaboratively with our nurses and support workers to enable our clients to lead healthier and independent lives that support them in making decisions about the care they receive.
