The starting salary for a TCS nurse can depend on your role and the service you work for. Your pay rates may increase due to your role, shifts, the service you work in, and the individual you care for. Below is a breakdown of the starting salary for our nursing roles.
Nurse pay rates or wages are hourly or daily payments for the shifts you have worked. Nurse pay rates can be a variable amount which means the more shifts you work, the more you will earn.
A nursing salary is a periodic fixed payment agreed by the employer and employee on an annual basis. A salary is stated in an employee’s contract. Depending on the employer, you may receive your salary weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
Traditionally, agency nurses receive higher pay rates than permanent nurses. A few factors that determine your pay are your nurse role, the service you work in, the person you care for, and the shifts you work.
At Thornbury Community Services, we offer a range of shifts to suit your work-life balance. We have days, nights, weekends, bank holidays, and school shifts available. At Thornbury Community Services, we offer our healthcare professionals increased rates of pay for UK bank holidays. Our bank holiday pay rates will differ depending on the TCS service you work in, the individual you care for and the shifts you work with us.
Thornbury Community Services uses PAYE (Pay As You Earn) to pay our workers salary.
This means that TCS is responsible for deducting National Insurance and Income tax from the healthcare professional. The amount deducted is dependent on the healthcare professional’s tax code, which is provided by HMRC.
This is determined by how many timesheets a nurse submits within the week.
Below is a breakdown of the timesheet submission dates and the pay dates for timesheets.
Please note, Monday timesheets of the current week will go through at the earliest on a Thursday’s payroll run.
For tax purposes, we can’t pay our nurses in the same week as they have worked. For example, if a TCS nurse has a shift on a Monday, the earliest they can be paid is the following Monday.
Our nursing pay rates vary depending on each individual, their care needs, the hours they require care, and other bespoke factors. The nurse would need to confirm the rate of pay at the time of booking their shift with the Care Coordination Team.
The main reason that would impact a nurse’s pay is their timesheet submission. If the timesheet is submitted incorrectly or the information on the timesheet does not match.
Payroll would always advise that our nurses refer to their TCS information portal, Compass, where there is a section on timesheet submissions. We recommend using their shift management app, ipoint, to ensure the information matches and refer to the timesheet guide for a successful submission.
Holiday pay is included in the nurses’ hourly pay rate. On their payslip, their hourly rate is broken down to show how much was paid as holiday pay. A nurse would need to add the holiday pay and rate of pay together to get the total hourly rate.
The rule for travel expenses is that tax relief is allowed for travel between home and a temporary workplace but not for travel between home and a permanent workplace.
Our healthcare professionals travel to and from their place of work, and this is treated as a permanent workplace and as a result travel costs to and from home are taxable. However, any mileage carried out during their shift will be paid as business miles, these are paid at 45p per mile and are non- taxable.
National Insurance at TCS is calculated on a weekly basis. Our system calculates Income tax and National Insurance on the date the shift was worked, not the date the timesheet is processed.
The amount deducted is dependent on the healthcare professional’s tax code.
If the nurse believes that their tax code is incorrect, they will need to contact HMRC. We are unable to change it without notification from them. Their details are below:

Please be advised if a nurse is paid multiple times in one week, they would need to combine all their payslips together to get the total deductions.
The standard auto enrolment contributions are 5% for employees’ and 3% for employers. There is a lower earnings limit of £120.00 (no deductions taken until they have earned over this amount) and an upper earnings limit of £962 (no deductions taken over this amount).
The maximum contribution would be 100% (95% voluntary and 5% Auto-enrolment)
Any contributions are taken from earnings between these limits £962 – £120 = £842 this is the maximum amount that can be taken in one week.
They can increase your AVC, but it would still be calculated on the pensionable earnings of £842.00.
